Turn around

No this is not about a cheesy eighties pop song by Bonnie Tyler. It is more about the practice of seeing things from new angles. Often we get so caught up in our own little world, that everything we see becomes truth. We think everything we see from our perspective is the correct way. Not only is this dangerous, but it is also pretty boring. Imagine a world where you never discovered anything new, and never learned anything new.

To illustrate my point, have a look at these two images:

The first one was taken just before sunrise in Durban, South Africa. I was looking at this amazing sky with the beautiful colours, and it was truly breathtaking. Then, as the sun peeled over the horizon, I thought: what is happening on the other side? So I turned around and was even more blown away. The light and colours on the banana leaves behind me was even more stunning. From the pastel blue and pink ocean and sky, the colours exploded in orange and green, but still soft and luscious. The image of the banana plant is one of my all time favourites. And I would never have seen it, if I hadn't turned around and looked at my surroundings from a different perspective.
